Elderberries are a very powerful fruit that have been eaten and used as a medicine for thousands of years. Way back when, it was used to fight herpes outbreaks, for inflammation and upper respiratory infections. Nowadays you will even find them in a lot of over the counter supplements for colds and flus; lozenges, syrups and gummies.
Elderberry works in many ways to help our bodies. They are naturally high in flavonoids, which helps keep our immune systems strong. They have antiviral agents, which help kill common pathogens that in turn will help us fight cold and flu symptoms. They are an anti-catarrhal and have anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties; they help rid the body of excess mucus and reduce inflammation, making them also good for allergies and sinus problems.
When I first learnt about Elderberries, I came across a recipe on Pinterest for Elderberry Syrup. It was initially designed to turn into gummies (which I am yet to do) but I have used it like a natural cough syrup and have seen amazing results.
⅔ cup dried elderberries
3 ½ cups of water
2 Tbs dried ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp whole cloves
1 cup raw honey
- Pour your water into a saucepan adding everything but the honey. Place your lid over the saucepan but leave a gap for the steam to exit.
- Bring your saucepan to boil and then reduce to simmer for an hour (or until the liquid has halved)
- Remove the mixture from the heat and allow it to cool before pouring through a strainer and into a glass mixing bowl. Allow your liquid to cool to lukewarm.
- Now add your honey and mix well to combine.
- Sttre your Elderberry Syrup in a glass jar in the fridge for months.

One day I will turn them into gummies and let you all know how I go. Honestly though, have a bottle of this in your fridge through winter and a teaspoon in the morning, when you’re not feeling well, is all it will take to help the healing process.
